Moving the Chain is an ongoing series from Blockchain WTF that shines a spotlight on folks who are making an impact in the world of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency

Profile

Ashton Kutcher is an actor and investor who originally hails from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is arguably best known for portraying Michael Kelso on the popular sitcom, That 70’s Show. Kutcher has also starred in several Hollywood films such as the Steve Jobs biopic – Jobs.

As blockchain technology and cryptocurrency continues to grow in popularity, we have seen a number of celebrities jump on the bandwagon, hoping to gain some publicity – or perhaps make a quick buck.

However, Ashton Kutcher is hardly a Johnny-come-lately to the crypto scene. In fact, his interest in blockchain tech dates as far back as 2013. That year, he invested in BitPay – a bitcoin payment service provider – while also speaking about bitcoin publicly at a TechCrunch Disrupt event.

Those who follow him on Twitter may have seen the television star tweeting about blockchain ventures like the Ethereum Project.

More recently, in 2017, Kutcher has been linked to (and invested in), UnikrnGold. UnikrnGold is a decentralized e-sports gaming token – which is also backed by billionaire businessman Mark Cuban.

Ashton Kutcher’s willingness to not only publicly endorse blockchain tech, but also invest his own money in it, has generated a great deal of publicity – thus helping to move the chain forward.

Quotable

“The bigger thing with bitcoin is: what can that decentralized technology really do? […] Imagine if we could decentralize that issue of security and if we can decentralize security.”

“The notion that we could civically monitor each other in an anonymous way actually keeps the anonymity of the Internet, we don’t have to worry about Big Brother, and that same infrastructure that built out bitcoin could be used in the security industry for mass good.”

Fun Fact

In 2015, Ashton Kutcher married his former That 70’s Show co-star – actress Mila Kunis – who played the role of Jackie Burkhart on the series.
